Benjamin Cardin (United States)
was elected Vice-President of the Assembly at the Annual Session in Brussels in July 2006, after having served as Chair of the Second Committee.
Before being elected to the U.S Senate by the people of Maryland in November 2006, Mr. Cardin represented Maryland's Third Congressional District in the US House of Representatives from 1987 to 2006. He is currently the Co-Chairman of the U.S. Commission on Security and Co-operation in Europe (Helsinki Commission). He is also a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, Judiciary Committee, Environment and Public Works Committee, Budget Committee and Small Business Committee. Prior to being elected to Congress, he served in the Maryland House of Delegates from 1967-1986, where he was Speaker of the House from 1979-1986.
