OSCE PA human rights committee Chair Ignacio Sanchez Amor deplores the killing of journalist Pavel Sheremet, calls for exhaustive investigation

COPENHAGEN, 20 July 2016 – Ignacio Sanchez Amor, the Chair of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly’s Committee on Democracy, Human Rights and Humanitarian Questions, today condemned the killing of journalist Pavel Sheremet, which took place earlier today in Kyiv, Ukraine.

“I strongly condemn the murder of Pavel Sheremet and call for a prompt and exhaustive investigation. My deepest sympathies go out to Sheremet’s loved ones and colleagues, who lost a brave and esteemed journalist,” Sanchez Amor said.

Originally from Belarus, Sheremet worked in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine during his career. He had lived and worked in Kyiv for the past five years as a journalist for Ukrayinska Pravda and Radio Vesti.

“Throughout his career, Pavel Sheremet showed admirable courage in his independent and reliable reporting and demonstrated the invaluable role of journalists in defending human rights,” Sanchez Amor said.

Sheremet received the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly’s 2002 Prize for Journalism and Democracy for his work in promotion of OSCE principles of democracy and human rights.
