Economic and environmental committee elects officers

The First Committee continued to debate amendments to Rapporteur Vilija Aleknaite Abramikiene's draft resolution Saturday morning. Five amendments were discussed, two of which were adopted. The resolution passed with one vote against and one abstention.

The supplementary item "Helsinki +40" was adopted with one dissenting vote, while the "Impact of Small States in the OSCE" was agreed to unanimously. The resolution on Moldova also received overwhelming support. The resolution "OSCE and the Emerging Democracies in the Arab World" provided for a lively debate and was adopted with no opposition.

In the Second Committee, Members debated the resolution offered by Rapporteur Tony Lloyd (United Kingdom). Fourteen amendments were agreed to and the resolution passed unanimously. The committee also amended and adopted four supplementary items: "Sharing Expertise in Reclaiming Water Resources in Order to Strengthen Global Food Security", "Promotion and Use of New and Renewable Sources of Energy", "Assistance for Children in the Aftermath of Crisis Situations", and "Freedom of Movement in the OSCE Region."

By acclamation, members of the Second Committee re-elected Serhiy Shevchuk (Ukraine) as Chair. Roza Aknazarova (Kyrgyzstan) was elected Vice-Chair and Christos Stylianides (Cyprus) Rapporteur, also by acclamation.

The meeting of the Third Committee began with consideration of the supplementary item on Belarus. Fourteen amendments were considered, with all but one agreed to. The resolution was adopted as amended.

Rapporteur Coskun Coruz presented his report, "The OSCE: A Region of Change," and also reported on his trip last week to Ukraine, where he visited former Ukrainian prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko in a Kharkiv hospital. In its afternoon session, the Third Committee took up the rapporteur's draft resolution. The committee approved 13 amendments to the resolution, with another 13 rejected. The remaining 12 amendments will be considered Sunday.

The First Committee's afternoon session dealt with two supplementary items, on Iran's nuclear programme and a proposal to enlarge the partnership with non-member Mediterranean States to include the Palestinian National Authority. Both resolutions provided for a lively debate. The resolution on Iran was adopted with one amendment, while the resolution on enlarging the Mediterranean partnership failed by a vote of 22 to 28, with seven abstentions.
