A Parliamentary Web Dialogue to explore the effects of the pandemic on women and girls

Although the COVID-19 pandemic has served to reaffirm women’s vital and meaningful role in our societies, evidence also suggests that the pandemic may increase existing inequalities. Indeed, the impacts of COVID-19 on women and girls touch on all aspects of gender equality. The pandemic is amplifying social and economic disparities, impacting women’s health, and contributing to an increase in gender-based violence. The crisis also has implications for women’s representation in politics, as well as the Women, Peace and Security agenda.

Against this backdrop, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly is holding an online discussion where parliamentarians will have an opportunity to hear and discuss the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic on gender equality. Parliamentarians will explore challenges faced by women, share good practices across the OSCE region in addressing the impact of the pandemic on women and girls, and exchange views on the lockdown on gender-based violence.

The webinar will feature remarks from OSCE PA Special Representative on Gender Issues Hedy Fry, OSCE PA President George Tsereteli, Director of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights Ingibjörg Sólrún Gísladóttir, Inter-Parliamentary Union President Gabriela Cuevas Barron, and Françoise Girard, President of the International Women’s Health Coalition.

Hedy Fry will present the new OSCE PA report, "The Gendered Impacts of COVID-19."
