OSCE PA leaders call for transparency and accountability following allegations of intimidation in Georgia

COPENHAGEN, 10 June 2025 – OSCE Parliamentary Assembly President Pia Kauma (Finland) and Special Representative on the South Caucasus Luís Graça (Portugal), in co-ordination with Lucie Potůčková (Czechia), Chair of the OSCE PA’s General Committee on Democracy, Human Rights and Humanitarian Questions, and Carina Ödebrink (Sweden), the Committee’s Rapporteur, have expressed concern following public allegations by United National Movement Chair Tinatin Bokuchava regarding the reported abduction and intimidation of her husband.

“The circumstances of this case remain to be fully clarified, but the nature of the allegations, if proven true, is deeply serious,” said President Kauma. “Any attempt to intimidate political leaders or their families is fundamentally incompatible with democratic values and the OSCE’s human rights commitments. A thorough and transparent investigation is essential to ensure accountability and public confidence.”

Committee Chair Lucie Potůčková and Rapporteur Carina Ödebrink both emphasized the need to uphold democratic safeguards in such situations, stating: “In a democratic society, the safety and freedom of all political actors and their families must be guaranteed. This is not only a matter of personal security – it is a question of political integrity and public trust in democratic institutions.”

Special Representative Luís Graça added that the OSCE PA will continue monitoring the situation closely and stands ready to support Georgia in its efforts to uphold democratic principles and political pluralism.

The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly remains committed to supporting the Georgian authorities in advancing democratic reforms and ensuring respect for human rights, the rule of law, and inclusive political dialogue, the leaders stressed.
