COPENHAGEN, 16 August 2025 – Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine must be brought to an end on the basis of clear principles, said OSCE Parliamentary Assembly President Pere Joan Pons (Spain), following the meeting between United States President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin near Anchorage, Alaska.
“The brutality of Russia’s war against Ukraine and its people reminds us daily of the need for this aggression to end,” said President Pons in a statement today. “While I welcome all major efforts aimed at peace, it is regrettable that yesterday’s summit yielded no significant results. I also remain convinced that for progress to be made all major actors – particularly Ukraine, as well as Europe – must be involved, and talks must be solidly based on the principles that underpin the OSCE including sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
President Pons reiterated the OSCE PA’s positions outlined in its recent Porto Declaration, noting that the Assembly demands a ceasefire, the immediate cessation of all acts of aggression and the full withdraw of Russian forces from the entire territory of Ukraine. He noted also that he looks forward to next steps, including a proposed meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday.
