OSCE PA President Muttonen condemns shooting of U.S. Congressman and staff, hopes for full recovery

COPENHAGEN, 14 June 2017 – Following a shooting at a baseball field in a Northern Virginia suburb of Washington, DC, which eyewitnesses said appeared to target Members of Congress, OSCE Parliamentary Assembly President Christine Muttonen (MP, Austria) issued the following statement:

“I was saddened and disturbed to hear the news that a gunman opened fire today on Members of the U.S. Congress, injuring several people including at least one lawmaker, Steve Scalise. An attack targeting elected officials is an attack on democracy itself and should be condemned in the strongest terms.

“I am relieved that Congressman Scalise’s wounds are reportedly not considered life-threatening and I wish him and all those affected by this tragedy a rapid and full recovery. My thoughts are with Members and staff of Congress, including the U.S. Delegation to the OSCE PA, and all the American people.”
