OSCE PA President highlights inter-parliamentary co-operation at IPU meeting

COPENHAGEN, 23 October 2018 – OSCE PA President George Tsereteli (MP, Georgia) participated last week in the 139th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Geneva, Switzerland, where he underlined the importance of enhanced co-operation between the IPU and OSCE PA.

George Tsereteli IPU presidentIPU President Gabriela Cuevas Barron and OSCE PA President George TsereteliIn his remarks on 16 October, President Tsereteli built upon messages he had delivered the previous week at the Third Meeting of the Speakers of Parliaments of Eurasian Countries in Turkey and at the Meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council in Vienna, Austria.

He reiterated the OSCE PA’s concern about the state of the OSCE, and multilateralism overall, advocating closer collaboration between countries, parliaments, and international organizations to adequately address new challenges. “To achieve this vision, we jointly have to mobilize the necessary political will to uphold our commitments,” Tsereteli said.

On the margins of the event, President Tsereteli and Secretary General Roberto Montella met with IPU President Gabriela Cuevas Barron (MP, Mexico) and Secretary General Martin Chungong. They also participated in a roundtable discussion on ways to build greater coherence and effectiveness in global parliamentary co-operation, together with Presidents of regional parliaments and of other regional parliamentary organizations.
